Whoever wrote this report doesn’t understand how to read financial statements. The report shows that SnowBall earned a net income of over $115,000 from 1996 to 2009.

The report is incomplete and not balanced. It is more a brochure promoting Langley than a reliable reporting of the facts. Who wrote it?

  2. Daniel Wong Says:

Thank you for your interest and taking the time to review the documents as presented.

It is important for people to take an interest in their representative organization and ask questions about how their best interests are being served.

I encourage you to attend the SGM next weekend and present your questions. They are both important and very relevant. Make sure your representatives on the Board are all held to the utmost accountability.

    Sincerely,

    Daniel Wong
    DSBC Secretary

Langley City is 42 km from downtown vancouver, 50 minute drive from YVR.

That is centrally located with respect to what?

Id recommend comparing other major key competitions of other countries and see how far they are from the downtown of the hosting city.

As someone who has attended SnowBall as a competitive dance and helped out as a volunteer I have concerns about why there is any interest in moving the event out of the Downtown core. It may cost more but you get what you pay for. Keeping the event in Vancouver gives the event a feeling of prestige. For international couples, I know the really enjoy discovering Vancouver’s tourist sites during their downtime. Many people I know have come from the suburbs to Vancouver and made the SnowBall weekend a special weekend getaway. Asing those same people to “getaway” to Langley…that’s not going to happen. Personally, Langley is simply too far away for me. Without traffic it is a 45 minute drive…easily over an hour drive with any traffic. If this was a square-dancing event, I’d understand the choice of Langley. This is DanceSport – don’t alienate your supporters by making things more difficult for spectators.

With all due respect to Joyce, the $118,000 surplus appears to include the government grants that are apparently no longer available according to the published release document. You cannot treat the grants as though they were proper revenue. Without the grants, the spreadsheet clearly shows that the Snowball Classic is losing money.

With respect to the other posters regarding travel distance, a 45 minute drive is not far. As a competitor myself, I have to drive at least 45 minutes from where I live, not only to the Snowball Classic, but to ALL the ballrooms if I ever want to practice or attend a competition since these venues are always in Vancouver or Richmond. Perhaps just once a year, you wouldn’t mind driving an extra 20 minutes, if that. Besides, how do you think the people who live on the Island feel? 45 minutes? Pshhh! Besides, it’s free parking.

To “Concerned”, yes you get what you pay for, but that presumes that you can actually pay for it. The release suggests that finances are scarce, which is the only reason one would ever consider holding it anywhere other than the Hyatt. Langley may be too far away for “you”, but it’s not too far away for me, and what makes you more important than me? I’ve been driving 45 minutes to Snowball for years. Get over yourself.

Personally, I think the Langley Events Centre would be an interesting experience and I wouldn’t mind it at all. Besides, once finances become more stable, Snowball can always move back to Hyatt if it doesn’t work out.

The real question that should be asked is whether Langley is really that much cheaper, and will it actually be able to solve Snowball’s financial woes?

It’s been 4 months now, where is the report on the SGM that was to be posted ‘shortly’?? I think the members who weren’t able to attend deserve to know what transpired.
